SpaceX‘s Starship SN8 exploded earlier this week during a high-altitude test flight.
Despite successfully launching and completing its “landing flip maneuver” at a height of 41,000 feet, the SN8 started descending onto its landing pad before almost touching down and exploding in a large ball of fire.
The company’s CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to explain what happened, saying that everything was going smoothly until the landing sequence when there was low fuel header tank pressure during the landing burn, which caused a high touchdown velocity causing a massive explosion. Fortunately, Musk reassured that the team had collected all the data they needed for a fully successful launch test, and that the next Starship — SN9 — is already built and ready.
Fuel header tank pressure was low during landing burn, causing touchdown velocity to be high & RUD, but we got all the data we needed! Congrats SpaceX team hell yeah!!
