DEFIANCE, Ohio (WTVG) - For more than 20 years VIP nails has been a downtown Defiance staple. The nail salon is known best for its husband and wife owners, Victor and Mylinh Pham.
“They complement each other, they are great for each other,” said VIP customer and Pham family friend Konnie Meyer. “They’re each other’s yin and yang I’d guess you’d say.”
“Their love story is amazing, I dream of a love story like that,” said VIP customer and Pham family friend Katrina King. “If I can’t have a love like Victor and Mylinh, I don’t want to love at all.”
Victor and Mylinh met in California after Victor left his home in Vietnam with nothing but the clothes on his back. Now the two have a life together here in Defiance, where they say they spend every day devoted to their faith and love for one another.
“My wife means the whole world to me. God and Jesus first then my wife,” said Victor Pham. “She’s my number one human being.”
On Christmas night while spending time with family Mylinh began to fall ill with a headache. Mylinh passed out on their bathroom floor and didn’t wake up, suffering a dual brain aneurysm.
“I was just crying and bawling,” said Victor. “I didn’t know what to do, my wife does everything for me, everything.”
Mylinh was airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor where she continues to fight for her life.
Today marks Mylinh and Victor’s 16th wedding anniversary.
“He’s celebrating their anniversary in the best way that he knows how,” said Konnie Meyer. “Right now he feels the strength of God behind him and he feels like he has to do something.”
Victor decided that something would be an 87.9-mile walk, walking from Defiance to Ann Arbor.
“I’m thinking about my wife a lot,” said Victor. “Like she’s laying in a hospital, she’s in a coma.”
Victor is only allowed one hour in the hospital with his wife due to COVID restrictions. Victor says he’s walking to make his time count, praying for his wife’s recovery every step of the way.
“Anybody that knows them knows that Victor loves Lynn. Victor loves Lynn more than life itself,” said Katrina King. “He has faith that she will get through it, and we all do.”
Victor began his walk to see his wife Friday morning at 8 AM. Victor has no timetable as to when he will arrive on foot at the hospital. Victor has the support of his family and friends who are offering him places to stay the night, food, and sources of warmth along his trip.
“I know that God will bring my wife,” said Victor. “She’ll wake up, she’ll come home, not to have a normal life, but my wife and I will have an awesome life.”
Mylinh remains in a coma and is attached to a trach tube with half of her skull removed by doctors to relieve pressure and swelling around her brain. A Go Fund Me account has been created for Mylinh’s medical expenses. Victor is asking for prayers from the community more than anything else.
