2024 solar eclipse map: See the cities near Nashville on the path of totality and what to expect - Tennessean

If you're in Nashville and want to experience the full 2024 total solar eclipse on April 8, you'll have to make a day trip out to the surrounding states.

The eclipse will be partially visible from Nashville and only a small portion of West Tennessee is included in the path. According to NASA, the 2024 eclipse will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044.

Day trips to some cities in Kentucky and Indiana are only a few hours away. Observers there will be able to experience totality, where the sun is completely covered by the moon.

What to know:Path of April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse is a drive away from Memphis.

What happens during a solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth and completely blocks the face of the sun.

People viewing the eclipse from locations where the moon’s shadow completely covers the sun, will experience a total solar eclipse. People along the path of totality will see the Sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is normally hidden by the Sun, said NASA.

The stages of a total solar eclipse include: partial eclipse, shadow bands, Baily's Beads, Diamond Ring, and totality. The totality stage is the only time observers can view the eclipse with the naked eye.

How long will the solar eclipse be?

According to NASA, most places along the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes. The longest duration of totality will be 4 minutes, 28 seconds, near Torreón, Mexico.

In Nashville, the partial solar eclipse will start around 12:44 p.m. and end at 3:20 p.m., with maximum coverage, about 95 percent, at 2:03 p.m.
